jumping. the factories makes product for ikea and walmart. bangladesh gets 80% of export revenue from textiles. this business is bangladesh, and it's home to about 4,000 garment factories and a lot of them are like this one. they lack proper safety measures. when i read this, it reminded me about another fire, the one in the triangle shirt ways factory in new york city in 1911. it was the deadliest industrial accident in the history of new york city. 146 garment workers died in that fire, and most of them were women, just like in that fire in bangladesh. just like in bangladesh the death toll would have been much lower if there was appropriate emergency exits. in na case a lot of doors had been locked, and now there are reports that could have been the case with locked or stuck doors in bangladesh now in 2012. the new york city fire eventually helped to spur the growth of the international ladies garment workers union, which fought for better working conditions for sweat shop workers. we have every hope that the very sad events of this weekend will do the same for bangladesh, because

. a clothing factory that went up in flames. the workers trapped inside. the factory is in bangladesh but the clothes they make are for international companies, some of those companies american, allegedly including walmart. brian ross is tracking the factories and their safety violations and is already beginning to ask questions tonight. >> reporter: the fire broke out at night as hundreds of garment workers were on overtime shifts, producing clothes bound for major american retailers including walmart according to worker rights groups. officials in bangladesh say the flames spread rapidly on the ground floor, trapping those on the higher floors. there were no exterior fire escapes, according to officials, and many died from jumping from the upper floors. as they continued to remove bodies today, officials said at least 112 people died, but the number can go higher. it all adds to the shameful record. as previously recorded by abc news of more than 600 garment factory fire deaths in bangladesh over the last six years. the cheapest labor in the world and the most deplorable conditions.

in bangladesh poured into the streets today mourning more than a hundred garment workers killed in an inferno over the weekend, a factory with no fire exit. abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross has more. >> reporter: the tazreen factory was a death trap, and it was no secret. the fire broke out on the ground floor as hundreds of workers were upstairs on a late-night shift producing fleece jackets and trousers for the holiday rush at american stores including walmart according to labor rights groups. fire officials say the only way out was down open staircases that fed right into the flames. some workers died as they jumped from higher floors. firemen have now recovered at least 112 bodies in what has become a grisly fact of life for workers in bangladesh garment factories. as we found in an abc news investigation earlier this year, many of the best-known american retailers including tommy hilfiger and the gap have been drawn to bangladesh, drawn by the cheapest labor in the world, as low as 21 cents an hour, producing clothes in often crowded, deplorable conditions that would be
